Ask what’s showing

The woman
behind the name.

Lizzie O’Farrells takes its name from Elizabeth O’Farrell—a nurse, midwife, trade unionist and member of Cumann na mBan who played a vital role in the Easter Rising of 1916.

She carried Patrick Pearse’s message seeking an end to hostilities, stood beside him at the surrender and then brought the surrender order to the remaining garrisons across Dublin.

In the famous photograph, Elizabeth is largely hidden behind Pearse; only her shoes and the hem of her clothing remain in view. The shoe in Lizzie’s mark recalls that surviving glimpse—and a woman whose place in the story deserves to be seen.

The Waterloo Street building was formerly known as The Castle Bar. Lizzie’s is its next chapter.
